Police are hunting a suspect after a mother was stabbed in front of her son during a chilling Manchester knife attack, captured on CCTV. The victim, aged 24, was rushed to hospital where she is currently in a stable condition. The knife attack victim’s five-year-old son was not injured in the attack. From what was described as a “vicious and unprovoked attack,” Greater Manchester Police have released CCTV images which clearly show the attacker. On Saturday afternoon, the young mother was walking with her son along Rudheath Avenue in the Withington area of South Manchester. There, she was approached by the man pictured in CCTV images who was armed with a knife.
According to police reports, the man started stabbing the victim as soon as he had come across her. After a vicious and frenzied assault on the victim, the attacker ran away, along Bromborough Avenue after which he continued in the direction of Whitchurch Road. Detective Inspector John Robb of Greater Manchester Police addressed the local community with a message of reassurance, “I understand that this will cause concern among the local community and residents, but I want to reassure the public that we are doing everything in our powers to trace the man responsible and ensure he is brought to justice.” He added, “Please do not hesitate to speak to our officers if you have any concerns of queries. If you believe you recognise the man in the image, or if you were near the area at the time and saw something that didn’t seem quite right, please get in touch with the police as a matter of urgency.”
Manchester has witnessed a spate of high-profile incidents of knife crimes in recent times. At the end of last year, a crazed knife attacker slashed at shoppers in broad daylight in the Arndale shopping centre. Prior to that, the knife murder of teenager Yousef Makki made headlines, as the young victim lost his life in a drug deal gone wrong.
